Looks like we've had pretty similar experiences. I wonder why the default tendency is to think more output is always the answer.

Here's what I've learned:

- First 3-6 months IS about output. You develop your rhythm, find your voice and experiment.

- Next 6-9 Step back, zoom out and determine what's working and what isn't.

- Next 9-12 months...I'll let you know once I'm there :)

We're very aligned Ben. I have another article coming out soon that discusses this exactly. I share what I found the REAL benefit of posting more -- it wasn't growth. Happy to share you the draft if you're interested.

I agree, I think...I've been here less than one month so I am really just learning all the features and seeing which posts or notes are connecting. Insights in the dashboard are really helpful. So far, I'm managing to connect (replies etc) but I wonder how hard that would be with an increase in subscribers. Maybe I'll find out one day. :)

I'm loving doing several Notes a day. But what I enjoy even more is making connections through commenting and restacking others' Notes that I feel help my readers.

Thanks for these great tips Landon. I'll be experimenting more . Doing and hosting guest posts is my latest.

Experimenting is all we can do! Try, see what feels good, what works, drop what doesn't.

Especially “what feels good” is a great barometer of whether the experiment is working.

This is all excellently good.

I found 2 (maybe 3) notes a day seems to be a sweet spot for me. When I posted more, I think my reach went down. I don’t know for sure but seems like it.

Cross-promoting here is gold. I did one with a writer a few weeks ago and was a major subscriber boost.

I’m interested in posting my Substack content on medium. I’ve never done it. Im thinking that and starting more “lives” is a good next step.

Thanks Wes, appreciate you taking the time to read. A couple friends encouraged me to tinker around with Medium. Now, as I finish a Substack post, I just copy/paste it over on Medium and submit it to a publication. I am generating $200/Month at the moment with it. That's with zero effort. A lot of chatter about how revenue is down there, but I am curious to see if it grows.

“Comment within the margins of life.” I love this as notes were starting to stress me out a bit. I think maybe 1-2 notes a day is good for me. I’d rather comment on other people’s stuff anyway. Really good information here and I’ll probably come back to it.

Asking for recommendations don't always work but when it does, it works like magic

Expand full comment
Landon Poburan's avatar

Exactly. Its definitely not always that easy. And any time I mention it I get LOTS of requests and I obviously can't recommend everyone. But I wanted to demonstrate, sometimes it CAN be that easy

Maybe someday I will be able to write about my success story but right now I write hoping someone will benefit from my writing and one day I could make a living out of my writing. I think once a week news letter is good, chats are good to connect and build relationships, I definitely like restacking because some people write awesome articles, life changing ones. I like to help people.

The benefits of writing span beyond what's traditionally viewed as success, too.

Another great post! Keep up the good work Landon.

"Re-post long-form posts to Medium publications."

When you say this do you mean copypasta or rehashing the content?

What would you do if there weren't many people in your "niche" to trade recommendations with?

Expand full comment
Landon Poburan's avatar

I post the exact same content there. Maybe it's not the best strategy, but it's what I've been doing. For recommendations, I'd start with the most relevant, then slowly work your way out. Example, maybe there aren't as many woodworking, but you can move into the broader 1-2 steps out. Home improvement. Organization. Home building. Sustained living. Etc.

Ah ok! Not a bad idea to be honest. Low effort exposure. Unless I found you on medium too I'd never know anyway. Do you put a link to your Substack as well to bring people "home"?

That's a good shout on DIY and home improvement I hadn't thought of that.

Thanks

Your free advice here without a price tag is really really valued. It's like a rare diamond amongst the 100s of quick formulae rubbish I've been getting here. The stack's algorithm is/was also flawed until I learned to flag the worst ones as spam. Once again, thank you for helping me build my exhilarated tribe!
